Ramachandran

A. Ramachandran is an artist whose work I have studied and admired for many years. I have always been drawn to his vibrant use of color and the way he integrates color with shape and texture.

This piece is my exploration of those qualities, especially the jewel-like colors of the bird and the incredible vibrancy of the water lilies. I built the painting in layers, beginning with watercolor-like washes and gradually building opacity, color, and texture. The process was playful and brought me so much joy.

Year: 2021

Dimensions: 18.0″ × 24.0″ × 1.0″

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0749/8494/7902/files/1789591692017_Study_of_A._Ramachandran.jpg?v=1789595337
liza-savage-katz-30379-study-at-the-schonbrunn-museum-178
STUDY AT THE SCHÖNBRUNN MUSEUM

This oil painting began with a sculpture I encountered at the Schönbrunn Museum in Vienna. I was captivated by the figure and brought the experience home with me as a starting point for my own exploration.

I began by painting the figure as a study, then started imagining something beyond what I had seen. An ethereal, angel-like figure emerged in the background, almost as a trompe-l'œil image, while layers of greenery began to grow around the composition.

I had other ideas for where the painting might go, but eventually I realized I loved it as it was. I stopped trying to make it something else and let the painting be.

For me, this piece is about the space between what we see and what we imagine—and the unexpected beauty that can emerge when we allow a painting to tell us when it is finished.

Year: 2011

Dimensions: 16.0″ × 12.0″ × 1.5″

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0749/8494/7902/files/1789592060889_Study_at_Scho_nbrunn_Museum.jpg?v=1789595342
liza-savage-katz-30379-soul-sisters-beautifully-broken-whole-as-one
Soul Sisters - "Beautifully broken. We are beautifully broken and whole as one.”

Some women leave an impression on us that remains long after the years have passed. They become part of our stories, our growth, our memories, and ultimately, part of who we are.

Victoria was one of those women for me.

Our relationship was deep, complicated, sometimes tumultuous, deeply inspiring, and profoundly meaningful. Vicky was my elegant British big sister—a deeply spiritual, wildly creative woman whose vision and artistry inspired so much of my own journey.

She wrote books and screenplays, developed television series, created documentaries, and had an extraordinary ability to see possibilities before other people could. She was the person who gave me the name KaleidoscopeME, and our paths crossed through advertising, filmmaking, spirituality, and our shared fascination with extraordinary women.

She passed away from cancer when she was about my age, but the impression she made on my life remains. Her soul has seen lifetimes with me.

Sometimes the relationships that challenge us most become the ones we understand differently with time. What once felt confusing or painful can eventually reveal another layer of meaning. We begin to see the complexity, depth, and beauty of what that person brought into our lives.

Victoria inspired this first Soul Sister drawing.

The image began with a feeling—a relationship that had become part of me. Through the pen, that feeling found its way onto the page.

The artwork you see here is the original drawing from which personalized pieces are created. When you purchase one, I print the artwork, hand-mat it, add the name of your Soul Sister in the color you choose, and personally sign and date the finished piece.

The image begins with Victoria's story, but the meaning becomes yours.

It might honor a lifelong friend, a sister of the heart, a woman who changed your life for a season, or someone you carry with you even though she is no longer here.

Beautifully broken. Whole as one.

COMMISSIONS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST

Every Soul Sister has her own story.
I'd love to help you tell yours.

If you have a Soul Sister whose story deserves its own artwork, I also offer original Soul Sister commissions.

I'll begin by listening to your story—learning about the woman, the relationship, and what makes your connection meaningful. From there, I'll create an original drawing inspired specifically by your story.

Year: 2016

Dimensions: 5.0″ × 5.0″ × 0.25″

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0749/8494/7902/files/1789509214035_Soul_Sister_-_Victoria.png?v=1789666984
liza-savage-katz-30379-grandpapa-951
Grandpapa

Oil and stretched canvas.

Grandpapa is a portrait of memory—of the way we sometimes remember the people we love not exactly as they were, but as they live inside us.

My French-Canadian grandfather was a farmer and cheesemaker from Quebec. I don't remember him wearing a beret or playing the flute, but somehow this is how I see him: an old-world figure in the quiet landscape of my imagination, with a little melancholy and sweetness beneath it.

I painted this when I was 18, during my early studies as an artist. I remember learning that even a seemingly flat wall could have shape and dimension simply through the placement of forms and values.

The sleeping dog, the solitary figure, the doorway, and the quiet outdoor setting give the painting a sense of weight and tenderness.

This painting has hung in my family home for more than three decades. It is one of those pieces that carries both the history of the person who painted it and the history of the people who lived alongside it.

Grandpapa is, ultimately, a painting about love, memory, and the complicated tenderness of family.

Year: 1989

Dimensions: 20.0″ × 20.0″ × 1.0″
